HMTA and MTNA competitions provide valuable preparation and performance opportunities for developing musicians and young artists.
HMTA Junior artist competition
Celebrating its 51st year in 2018, HMTA’s Junior Artist Competition is designed to challenge and support Hawaii’s developing musicians, aged 5 through 18. Separate from the MTNA competitions, HMTA’s Junior Artist Competition winners perform in an annual Honors Concert.
The MTNA Competitions provide opportunities for serious musicians in junior high, high school, and college/university to compete at a national level. Competitions are held at the state level first. Hawaii State winners move on to the Southwest Division Competition. For year 2018, the Division Competitions will be held online only.

2018 J.S. Bach award
All students performing a piece by J. S. Bach in the HMTA and MTNA competitions are eligible to compete for the J. S. Bach Award. The award is in addition to the usual 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes awarded for each level. Winners of the J. S. Bach Award will be honored at the at the annual Honors Concert.
