The 2019 Hawaiʻi State Music Competition is open to Piano, Violin, Low String (Viola, Cello, Bass) and Woodwind (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone) students aged 5-18.
Competition Levels are determined by the Entrant’s age on October 15, 2019. Levels in 2019 are:
Pre-Level (ages 5-6)
Level I (ages 7-8)
Level II (ages 9-10)
Level III (ages 11-12)
Level IV (ages 13-15)
Young Artist (ages 16-18)
Entrants must have studied with their current teacher for at least three months prior to the competition day.
The entrant’s teacher is encouraged, but not required, to be a member of HMTA. An additional fee will be required from students not sponsored by an HMTA member-teacher.
Entrants competing in the 2019 MTNA Solo Competitions are not eligible to compete in the 2019 Hawaiʻi State Music Competition.
Please note that, starting with the 2020 Hawaiʻi State Music Competition, previous first-place winners be ineligible to compete in the same level.
String Divisions (NEW in 2019)
In 2019, the Level IV and Young Artist string competitions will be divided into Violin and Low String (Viola, Cello, Bass). Each division will have separate awards. All strings will compete together in Pre-Level through Level III.
